On April 26, 2024, the Academic Affairs office and CTLT organized training on the Alignment of Learning Outcomes and Assessment for 51Թfaculty as part of faculty development initiatives. Led by Dr. Martha Merrill, a distinguished Professor from Kent State University, Ohio, USA, the training attracted twenty-three faculty members representing various programs across AUCA. Dr. Merrill's expertise and experience in curriculum development and instructional design enriched the training session, offering practical guidance and innovative approaches to course planning and assessment.
The session began with exploring external factors influencing learning outcomes within individual courses. Dr. Merrill highlighted the importance of designing course learning outcomes that are specific, measurable, and time-bound. Through interactive discussions and examples, participants gained insights into the significance of aligning learning outcomes with course content and instructional activities.
One of the highlights of the training was a presentation on syllabus design using the backward design approach based on the framework proposed by Wiggins and McTighe. Faculty members were encouraged to reflect on fundamental questions such as "What should students know or be able to do at the end of the course?" and "What evidence will be accepted to demonstrate achievement of the learning outcomes?" Dr. Merrill emphasized providing students with the necessary resources and support to meet the desired learning outcomes.
The final segment of the training focused on classroom assessment strategies, including formative assessment techniques for ongoing feedback and summative evaluation methods for assessing student achievement. Faculty members engaged in collaborative activities to explore diverse assessment practices that promote student learning and academic success.
Overall, the training session on aligning learning outcomes and assessment proved to be a valuable opportunity for 51Թfaculty members to enhance their pedagogical skills and instructional practices. Participants gained valuable insights and strategies to optimize teaching and learning experiences in their respective courses and programs through engaging discussions, practical exercises, and expert guidance from Dr. Martha Merrill.
The Academic Affairs office and CTLT remain committed to fostering a culture of continuous professional development among faculty members, supporting their efforts to deliver high-quality education and enrich the learning experiences of 51Թstudents.
